SPF component is one of the vital ingredients of your skincare routine. You must have heard SPF a lot of times while buying your favorite brand’s sunscreen, but what is it and how different SPF degrees work for your skin is something Inveda has you to tell.

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVA & UVB rays of the sun. First of all let us understand the difference between UVA & UVB rays on the basis of the damage caused by both of them.

UVB rays effect the outer layer of your skin. Epidermis, your most exposed skin layer is damaged due to these harmful rays. The signs prevalent on your skin of the same are proven to be redness, itchiness and skin irritation.

UVA rays are long enough to reach skin’s dermal layer, damaging collagen and elastic tissue. That layer is also where the cells that stimulate skin darkening are found; that’s why UVA rays are considered the dominant skin burning  rays as the internal damage is much more than the external damage.

SPF DEGREE AND ITS PROTECTION

The higher the number, the less UV passes through. It is very necessary to understand that no sunscreen protects your skin fully, i.e. 100% protection from the harmful UVA/UVB rays of the sun.

1. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays

2. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays

3. SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays

Put another way, assume your tender skin would take ten minutes to show signs of burning when you are exposed to sun. Proper application of  SPF 30 sunscreen would slow the rate of burning to the point where it would take 30 times longer, or 300 minutes in total.

  • SPF 15 would take 150 minutes to do the same.
  • SPF 50, 500 minutes is the time your skin will be protected from sun.

STRAIGHT FACTS

Sunscreens with really high SPFs, such as SPF 75 or SPF 100, do not offer significantly greater protection than SPF 30 and mislead people into thinking they have more protection than they actually do. There are a variety of other factors that play a greater role in determining the protection from the sun.

  • The weather conditions
  • How much you sweat
  • Your skin type
